As a kid in SoCal, Justin Oien probably had no idea that when he was on board his Fuji he would one day be riding on one professionally. He recently signed with Spanish Pro team Caja Rural-RGA for the next two seasons. This represents a huge opportunity for an American rider going to Europe and a source of pride for Southern California cycling. He joins us on the podcast and talks about his next chapter. As an Escondido local, he started out riding for the SDBC club, one of the oldest and largest clubs in the State. He quickly rose through the junior ranks and got the attention of the MRI/Monster Media team where they developed a mentorship style program with masters and junior racers. After having success there, he was picked up by the now defunct Cal Giant Cycling Team and was able to do some of the more national level where he found success. From there he was able to get on one of the biggest domestic squads in the country and ride for Axeon Cycling Team and compete in Europe where he placed 6th at the U23 Paris Roubaix and also represent the United States at the World Championships in the road race and time trial in Doha Qatar. At the age of 21 he touts himself as an all arounder but would love to win in a breakaway style race and then out kick the bunch. He realizes that riding for a team like Caja Rural, he needs to be a sponge and listen and learn on many of those European races and perhaps soon, race in a grand tour such as the Vuelta. He is going to move to Europe where he will no doubt find his place in the peloton. An enthusiastic and idealistic man, he is humble and positive to the core. Justin represents the future of American cycling and proves that through hard work and dedication, he has progressed so rapidly to the sport he has devoted his life to. This is an inspiring tale of someone who is at the doorstep of no doubt an illustrious career. Anyone listening will no Justin is the real deal and become a fan of his for years.
